Yatra or pilgrimage, this tour visits four holy sites in the Himalayas: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. ‘Char’ means four in Hindi, while ‘dham’ means religious destination.
High-altitude shrines remain closed for about six months every year, opening in the spring (April or May) and closing in the fall (October or November). The Char Dham Yatra should be completed clockwise. As a result, the pilgrimage begins at Yamunotri, proceeds to Gangotri, then to Kedarnath, and ends at Badrinath. It is possible to complete the journey by road or by air (helicopter services are available). Do Dham Yatras or pilgrimages to Kedarnath and Badrinath are even done by some devotees.
Goddess Yamuna is worshipped at the Yamunotri temple in Uttarkashi district, situated near the source of River Yamuna (the second-most sacred Indian river after River Ganga). Uttarkashi is also home to Gangotri, the most sacred of all Indian rivers dedicated to Goddess Ganga. In Rudraprayag district lies Kedarnath, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The sacred Badrinarayan Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Badrinath. As divine as it is arduous, the Char Dham Yatra fulfills the soul!
